'King Kong: Skull Island' Cast News & Release Date: Everything You Should Know
Legendary Pictures' "Kong: Skull Island" film, originally titled "Skull Island," will now open in theaters on March 10, 2017. The movie was previously reported to debut on November 4, 2016, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but Universal Pictures decided to change the release date.
"Kong: Skull Island," which will star Tom Hiddleston, will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D. The film will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, with John Gatins and Max Borenstein writing the screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the movie "is an origin tale, exploring the king of the apes' home as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island."
Just recently, Deadline reported that actor J.K. Simmons will star alongside Hiddleston. Nothing else has been confirmed about Simmons' character.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Kong: Skull Island," was previously aimed to compete against Marvel's "Doctor Strange" and Fox's "Trolls," which will both come out in theaters on November 4, 2016. But "Kong: Skull Island" backed out of the competition and is now up against Fox's untitled Bollywood musical.
Vogt-Roberts previously directed Sundance's "The Kings of Summer," as well as several episodes of FX's new TV series "You're the Worst." Aside from these, he also directed the pilot of "Cocked" for Amazon Studios and the concert documentary "Nick Offerman: American Ham," according to another report from The Hollywood Reporter.
Hiddleston, on the other hand, is best known for his portrayal of Loki in "Thor, "Thor: The Dark World," and "The Avengers." He was also in "Midnight in Paris," "War Horse," and starred alongside Tilda Swinton in "Only Lovers Left Alive." His upcoming projects include "Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's 'High-Rise' and Marc Abraham's Hank Williams biopic 'I Saw the Light'," the news outlet reports. Hiddleston will also star in Legendary's upcoming gothic horror film "Crimson Peak" directed by Guillermo del Toro.
"Kong: Skull Island" was confirmed by Legendary during a Comic-Con panel back in July. During the event, footage of an ancient island was shown, accompanied by a voiceover comparing the place to the very early days of Earth. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Skull Island is the mysterious home of King Kong, which was formerly featured in past "King Kong" films.
"Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions," the production company stated, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.
