Gran Turismo 6 News: Gameplay Includes Microtransactions in Game for Cars and Parts

Gran Turismo 6 is perhaps the most anticipated PlayStation 3-exclusive, in part due to the franchise's excellent reputation and the fact that it may be the last PS3-exclusive of this caliber for the console. The game is set to be released on Dec. 6, and developer Polyphony Digital has confirmed to the PlayStation Blog that the game will have microtransactions.

In the blog post, it was revealed that users can spend real world money to buy in-game credits in Gran Turismo 6, and use the credits to buy new cars for their roster. Players can also use the money to buy new parts for their vehicles. The game will offer credits in packs of 500,000, 1 million, 2.5 million or 7 million credits; no word how much the packs will cost gamers. However, a chart was released that showed nine cars a player can buy all together with just under 1 million credits, so it looks as though players may be able to stretch the microtransactions' worth out considerably.

Microtransactions have been controversial, as many gamers feel they are a way for developers to nickel and dime players who already spent $60 on a game to spend even more on the product. With developers frequently adding the feature, however, it looks as though microtransactions are here to stay.

In addition to revealing that Gran Turismo 6 will have microtransactions, the blog post also announced what will be in the Special Edition of the game, and also confirmed the Special Edition and regular edition of the game are available now for pre-order on the PlayStation Store:

"With the Special Edition, you'll get the full GT6 Game, 20 extra cars (Torque, Performance, Adrenaline and Velocity packs), custom PSN avatars, paint chips, race suits and race helmets - basically everything you need to fly past your friends on the way to the finish line. And, pre-ordering either of the editions on the store before launch will get you the great cars included in the Precision Pack for free."

Gran Turismo 6 is certain to be one of the hottest games of the holiday season, and the game should compete with the PlayStation 4 titles now available to users who have upgraded to the new consoles.
