Oman and Syria will face off in the AFC Asian Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
Oman sits in first place in Group A with seven points in three games while Syria is only three points behind with four; however, Oman has played one game less than its rivals.
Oman opened its tournament with a 1-0 win over Syria and then managed a 2-0 win over Singapore. In its most recent game, the team drew 0-0 in Jordan.
After losing 1-0 with Oman in its opener, Syria tied 1-1 with Jordan at home and lost 2-1 against Singapore in its third game. However, the team responded with a 4-0 destruction of Singapore at home that featured three goals in the final seven minutes of the game.
A win for Oman means automatic qualification for the nation. A loss for Syria would mean that the nation can only gain a total of seven points if it wins its final match of qualifying; Oman would have 10 with a win.
A win for Syria would put it in a tie for first place; however, Oman would still hold the game in hand and be able to get a total of 13 points if it wins its final two games. Meanwhile, Syria would only be able to accrue a total of 10 points with two wins in its final two games.
The top two teams in each group qualify for the Asian Cup in 2015 while the top third place team also earns a spot.
