Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fight in 2015? Jessie Vargas, Danny Garcia Possible Next Fight Opponents
If Floyd Mayweather will continue to run away from a fight against Manny Pacquiao, the camp of the Filipino boxer is eyeing two alternatives he can go against: Jessie Vargas and Danny Garcia.
After successfully beating Chris Algieri on Sunday, Pacquiao expressed his willingness to fight Mayweather next year. But since the undefeated American fighter is still obviously shying away from the possibility, WBA junior welterweight champion Vargas is hoping that his performance against Antonio DeMarco last Saturday would land him a chance to fight with Pacquiao for his next fight, Yahoo Sports noted.
Vargas reportedly showed greater power in the punches he threw at DeMarco with some considering it as one of his best fight in years.
"He took a wider stance than he'd had in the past and he was far more willing to let his hands go," Yahoo Sports added.
Surely, Vargas is ready to take on the much bigger fighter in Pacquiao as he challenged him to make a fight happen.
"Hey Manny Pacquiao, I'm the WBA champion and I hear you want to come down to 140 [pounds]. Let's make it happen. If you want this title, [fine]. I can go up and take your title, as well. I still have a grudge, to be honest, ever since I was a kid and he beat Morales and Barrera. They were the older lions and Manny Pacquiao was a younger, more hungry fighter," Vargas was quoted by Yahoo Sports as saying.
Coach Freddie Roach, however, has another boxer in mind. If a Mayweather fight is not possible, the camp would want to fight Garcia,Yahoo Sports added.
A report by local news channel ABS-CBN said Roach named Garcia as an "ideal opponent" for the Filipino boxer.
"He has an interest in fighting Pacquiao. (Pacquiao) is where the money is, and everyone wants to make more money. There is interest there," Roach added.
ABS-CBN noted that Garcia is also an undefeated fighter in his 29 fights and that he currently holds the WBC, WBA and RING Magazine light-welterweight titles. He has already beaten Erik Morales, Zab Judah and Lucas Matthysse.
"I think he's an exciting fighter. He's a puncher, he will go for the knockout. He will swing as hard as he can. He's a little bit wild. If you box him the smart way, I think he's beatable, but if you stand and trade with him, he's very dangerous," Roach explained.
Asked about the possibility of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, Roach said that there is a big possibility that the two will never face inside the ring.
"I think there will always be an asterisk on their records. Let's face it, the best should fight the best, and they've been the best guys out there. This is something that will haunt them forever, if it doesn't happen," Roach told ABS-CBN.
