Manny Pacquiao Update and Next Fight News: Pacman vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. Could Happen, After All
Manny Pacquiao might still have a shot to arrange a megabucks showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr., if he pulls off an impressive victory against Brandon Rios on Saturday in Macau.
Pacquiao's road to redemption begins this coming weekend as he faces the hard-hitting Californian brawler in what appears to be a make-or-break fight for the former pound-for-pound champion.
A win for Pacquiao would put him back to the top of boxing elites after absorbing a sixth round TKO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in December of last year. However, a loss could mark the end of Pacman's legendary boxing career.
Mayweather Fight on Horizon
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has been discussing several fight scenarios in the event Pacquiao defeated Rios. Of course, the fifth showdown between Pacquiao and Marquez remains the most viable option out there, given that both boxers are being managed by the Hall of Fame promoter.
Arum also discussed a potential slugfest between Pacquiao and his former sparring partner Ruslan Provodnikov next year, while he's still open to re-entering negotiations with Mayweather's camp in an attempt to arrange the long-overdue clash between two of the best fighters in the business.
"If Manny demonstrates that he's back and there's a public outcry, we should be able to get it done," Arum said in an interview with Australia's 1116 SEN Radio via Boxing Scene.
Roadblocks Ahead
Arum admitted that arranging the Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown is going to be hard, considering the present rivalry between HBO and Showtime. Moreover, Top-Rank hasn't worked with Golden Boy Promotions, the promotional outfit that carries Mayweather's fights, for the last few years.
Nevertheless, the promoter remains hopeful that the two networks can work together to finally arrange the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather showdown.
"The only major impediment is that Mayweather now fights for Showtime and Manny for HBO" but cited a precedent "when they had the same situation years ago where Lennox Lewis was an HBO fighter and Mile Tyson fought for Showtime," added Arum, who believed the 'Fight of the Century' could happen in the second half of 2014.
