'The Walking Dead' Season 5 Episode 6 'Consumed' Spoilers, Recap & Replay: Burning Body's Identity, Daryl & Carol Split
The sixth episode of this season's "The Walking Dead" opens with Daryl and Carol trying to find and save Beth, with flashback scenes interspersing with the present.
In an early scene, the duo (Daryl and Carol) were shown following a Grady Memorial vehicle. The two had an argument about whether to just run the vehicle off the road or keep following them and know their identity. They decided to pursue the latter, which was suggested by Daryl. They later found out that the van was driven by a couple of Dawn's guards.
Daryl and Carol then took a refuge in a shelter for abused children to spend the night. While holing up for the night, the two had a thought-provoking conversation. Carol revealed that she and her deceased daughter Sophia used to stay in a family shelter like that because of her abusive husband. Naturally, Carol is still grieving over everything that happened to her, and even told Daryl, "I don't think we get to save people anymore."
Upon discovering a roomful of walkers, Carol immediately moved to put them down, but Daryl insisted that she doesn't have to. The next day, Carol woke up to Daryl burning the bodies of the walkers they discovered earlier. Finally, the identity of the body covered in a white blanket that was shown in the episode preview was revealed, and it's one of the young walkers they had to dispose of.
Along the way, they scavenge for supplies in a van teetering off the edge of a skybridge. The abandoned vehicle gets run over by walkers, and Daryl and Carol found themselves trapped so they buckled themselves inside the van and allowed the undead to push the van. According to a report from TIME, "The undead following off the ledge like lemmings and splattering all around gives new definition to purple rain."
Afterwards, the twosome ran into Noah, who demanded Daryl's crossbow. When the weapon was handed over, Noah said, "Sorry about this," before slashing open a tent filled with walkers to deter Daryl and Carol from following him.
While Noah was fleeing, Carol aimed to shoot at his leg, but Daryl stopped him from killing the boy. Later on, the two ran into Noah again, who Daryl managed to get pinned underneath a bookcase. He pleaded for Daryl to help him, as there was a walker nearby. Daryl refused to help him, but quickly decided against it. He killed the walker using his retrieved crossbow and freed Noah.
Joining Daryl and Carol, he told them Beth's location and said that she helped him escape the hospital. While on their way to save Beth, Carol was hit by a Grady station wagon. As expected, Daryl moved to save her.
The episode concludes with Noah pointing out that it was best to let Carol be taken so that she will be treated in the hospital, and then the two of them could break in and save her and Beth. Daryl heeds Noah and agrees.
Will Daryl be reunited with Carol again?
