Aaliyah Movie 2014: Top 5 Reasons Why Biopic Flunked
After the premiere of the highly anticipated Aaliyah biopic, "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B" on Saturday via Lifetime, the reviews are in and they're not what producers have hoped for.
Numerous entertainment sites gave their own opinions on the movie that told the story of the late female artist who tragically died in a plane crash. Most of them gave a thumbs down rating, in fact, Inquisitr gave several reasons why many critiques thought the biopic flunked:
Here are the top five:
1. The report mentioned that the biopic had a poor casting list. It was noted that the actors and actresses did not even look similarly close to the real life characters they were portraying, except for the lead star chosen to play the role of Aaliyah, Alexandra Shipp.
2. It was not a good idea to have let Shipp do all the singing in the Aaliyah biopic. The young actress herself mentioned, in a Hollywood Life interview, that she did not lip sync the singing portions of the TV film. It could have been better if she concentrated on the acting.
3. The movie was reportedly, not written well. Instead of highligthing all the important moments of the Princess of R&B's life, it focused on the controversial relationship of Aaliyah with R. Kelly instead. Timbaland and Missy Elliott's roles had very limited exposures while Aaliyah's relationship with Damon Dash was also somehow rushed towards the movie's final act.
4. Unlike other successful biopics made in the past, the Aaliyah life story did not produce a movie that has a deep sense of the artist's back story. It failed to deliver a behind-the-scenes approach inside the late star's personal life.
5. Above all, it failed possibly because it did not get any support from the artist's family, as previously reported before the project came out on television.
According to Yahoo, the actress who was first cast for the lead role in the TV film, Zendaya Coleman, dropped out due to rumored issues with the production.
The two-hour biopic was based on the bestselling book "Aaliyah: More Than a Woman" by Christopher John Farley. It shared the story of the late hitmaker, from the time when she was first seen on "Star Search" up until she passed away in 2001 at a young age of 22.
