Xbox One vs PS4: Price Drop The Reason Why Microsoft Wins Console War?
A recent blog post by Microsoft claims that sales have tripled ever since the price drop and that for the first time, Xbox One is leading in terms of units shipped.
"As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks," wrote Corporate Vice President of Devices and Studio Yusuf Mehdi. "Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles."
Mehdi said that the Xbox One is "more affordable than ever this holiday season" at $349 in the United States, without the Kinect. The price drop was announced Oct. 27, noted IGN, and took effect Nov. 2. The promo runs until Jan. 3, 2015.
Aside from the price cut, Microsoft also introduced new bundles such as "Assassin's Creed Unity", "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" and "Sunset Overdrive."
"The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2," Mehdi said in the Xbox Wire blog post.
"Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday," he added.
On the other hand, "Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 4s worldwide during the three months between July and September, bringing its total unit sales to 13.5 million," GameSpot said in a report published late October.
Forbes' Jason Evangelho noted that Microsoft's impressive sales (compared to its usual before the price drop), can also be attributed to "aggressive marketing" and "exclusives" on top of the $50 off price tag.
CNet is reporting the same, saying that "the strategy appears to be working, at least in the short term."
In addition, "Halo: The Masterchief Collection," just arrived on the Xbox One. Forbes said that the franchise was instrumental to the Xbox 360's success and the same is expected now that it has arrived on Microsoft's next generation game console.
Next week, Rockstar Games will be rolling out the infamous "GTA 5" -- which just happens to be available in a bundle with the Sony PS4. Needless to say, the game is widely anticipated by fans and would-be fans who have enjoyed it on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Do you think Microsoft's Xbox One sales will continue to rise in the following weeks? Or will the PS4 be gaining advantage through the "GTA 5" bundle?
