Android L 5.0 Update Release Date: Moto X Download Due Before Nexus 6
Nexus devices still won't be getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update ahead -- because second-generation Moto G smartphones will receive the final version of Android's sweetest treat first, according to Ars Technica. For the unlocked U.S. version of the handset, the update is reported to come in the form of a 386.7 MB download.
The Next Web said such news could be surprising to Android users who usually saw Nexus phones and tablets receive updates before any other devices. Motorola leads the pack this time, ahead of Google's own Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 10 models.
Ars Technica cited in an earlier report that the 2014 Moto X is actually the first to get the update, though under a so-called "soak test."
According to Gospel Herald, Motorola has also confirmed the update to roll out in the following devices: Moto X (2nd Gen.), Moto X (1st Gen.), Moto G (1st Gen.), Moto G 4G-LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini.
Upgrading to Lollipop is relatively easy. NDTV cited two ways of getting the new OS: it should automatically come OTA (Over-The-Air), or it may be checked manually by visiting Settings > About phone > System updates. To authorize the download, the user must select "Yes, I'm in" in either options. Installation prompt follows.
Previously, we have covered that the LG G3 (Poland) is slated to receive Lollipop this week. Droid Life mentioned in a report that LG USA will be releasing the update before the year ends.
Lollipop is also expected to arrive among major smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, HTC, Zenfone and OnePlus One, as noted by International Business Times. The handset makers may probably wait for the update in the following months.
Meanwhile, iDigitalTimes reported that other Nexus devices will be receiving the update by Nov. 12, following the delay caused by a battery-draining bug in Nexus 5. As we have earlier noted, the issue has already been resolved, according to the announcement from Android Developer Preview site.
But it seems Nexus 7 Wi-Fi users may already get a glimpse of the update, as Android Authority took notice of the new OS' factory image being available for the device. The outlet pointed that it is unclear whether or not the image would be the final OTA release.
While all these devices are slated to get the Lollipop as an update, it must be noted that HTC's Nexus 9 and Motorola's Nexus 6 are shipping it firsthand. For those eyeing the latter, we have mentioned in a recent report the pricing schedules of some network carriers.
In fact, AT&T is accepting preorders now.
