'Star Wars: Episode 7' Release Date, Cast and Trailer: 'The Force Awakens' Title Revealed

By Staff| Nov 06, 2014

"Star Wars Episode 7" or "Star Wars 7" would now become monikers of yesterday, as Lucasfilm finally revealed the official title of the highly-anticipated seventh installment: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The title was unveiled in the franchise's official site StarWars.com, wrote IGN. Another announcement was made via Twitter, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completed principal photography."

Such announcement was a double-kill as apart from revealing the saga's newest title, the outlet has also confirmed that its principal filming has wrapped up. However, International Business Times wrote that many found the title to be simple.

A user responded to the tweet, "The title hasn't been announced yet" -- to which Star Wars replied shortly, "We just did." The short and simple title is therefore in its truest form.

The film is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015, according to CNN. It is directed and written by J.J. Abrams, with Lawrence Kasdan participating in the writing process. The outlet noted that all of the saga's previous films scored no. 1 in their respective years at the box office, except "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones."

To celebrate the finish of the principal photography, cast members reportedly had a wrap-up party in London's Science Museum reported Entertainment Weekly. The event was attended by Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, Andy Serkis and John Boyega.

An excerpt of the attendees' party card reads, "We are here to make a film that entertains millions of people, of all ages, for generations. To create an experience people will cherish watching as much as we will cherish having made it, together."

Those uninitiated in the Star Wars universe still have more than a year to catch up. An infographic provided by Murera narrated that the tale began when the Galactic Republic experienced turmoil.

As dispute and chaos took over the Republic, the Supreme Chancellor has let two Jedi knights address the situation.

Thousands of solar systems contemplated leaving the Republic for good. Under Count Dooku, the movement made it harder for Jedi Knights to maintain peace and order. Former Queen of Naboo, Senator Amidala, returns to the Galactic Senate to initiate an "Army of the Republic" to help out the Jedis.

Count Dooku attacked the Republic and war had commenced. General Grievous got into the Republic capital and kidnapped Galactic Senate leader Chancellor Palpatine. Jedi Knights attempted to rescue the Chancellor.

It must be noted that the events above, though showcasing the origin of the story, happened in the later Star Wars films. Apparently, the saga was split into two trilogies -- with the last three being a prequel.

Here is a timeline (via Rotten Tomatoes):

"Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" - 1977

"Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back" - 1980

"Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi" - 1983

"Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" - 1999

"Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" - 2002

"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" - 2005

As for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," IBT suggested that the return of original characters Hamil (Luke Skywalker), Fisher (Princess Leia) and Ford (Han Solo) may focus on Skywalker's journey in bringing back the glory of the Force.
