Android L vs iOS 8: Which Mobile OS is Better? [Poll]
Everyone's talking about the latest smartphones, tablets and everything in between -- one may look more beautiful over the other; another may come cheaper, and so on. But attention must also be given to one common denominator by which these devices work under: their operating systems.
Undeniably, the iOS and Android are among the top contenders in the mobile operating systems arena -- thanks to the devices they support and the reputation they've built over the years.
Simplified as OS, an "operating system" is defined by Tech Terms as "software that communicates with the hardware and allows other programs to run."
For a computer, Webopedia said it is the most important running program.
Hence, we have provided a brief comparison between the current Android 5.0 Lollipop and iOS 8, just in case you're torn between the two.
Highlights
Apple brands the iOS 8 as their "biggest iOS release ever." The OS was intended for developers and the public during its creation. With the iOS 8, Apple aims to provide the most natural and most useful user experience. That's clean!
The Android 5.0 Lollipop (then known as Android L), does not just work on phones and tablets -- the operating system powers compatible watches, TVs and cars. Leave it to Android, and perhaps life could be way easier.
Design & Notifications
The iOS 8 allows users to multitask in a convenient yet orderly fashion. Interactive notifications pop wherever the user is currently at, saving time needed to close tabs to respond to important messages. Apparently, tracking one's activities has never been easier!
Mail also gets smarter, as it instantly suggests important info such as phone numbers and reservations.
Lollipop allows easier navigation through "responsive and natural" motion. Additionally, users get to focus their attention with the incorporation of vivid colors and typography. Come on, it's Lollipop -- think colorful, bright and sweet!
With Android's OS, users can also view and respond to messages right in their devices' lock screens. A Priority Mode may be turned on to filter notifications.
Photography
Supported by iOS 8, Apple's Photos app takes picture-taking to the next level. Smart composition tools, adjustments and photo-editing tools may just bring out the best photographer in everyone. Apple says even the complete novice get great results. Wow.
Users can capture full-resolution frames around 30 fps with Lollipop. Metadata such as noise models and optical information may also be captured. Controlling settings for sensor, lens and flash per individual frame is also possible. Lollipop calls them -- as you expected it -- professional photography features.
Continuity
The iOS 8 connects iPhone, iPad and Mac "like never before." Integrating with desktop's OS X Yosemite, Apple's continuity feature allows users to start and continue working on any of the three stated devices under a single iCloud account.
For instance, a user can start writing an email through his iPhone and continue it at his Mac. Splendid!
Lollipop pops new notifications in three devices too: tablet, smartphone and smartwatch. The latter shows newly-arriving email messages, perfect for those quick glances!
Language Support
The iOS 8's QuickType is Apple's smartest keyboard ever. Suggested words come after a single tap, casual-conversation style. The keyboard is reported to adjust the writer's tone -- since one speaks differently in another situation.
The predictive text engine supports English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish and Thai. Apple added, "Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese input continue to feature predictive input."
Meanwhile, Lollipop supports over 68 whopping languages, including new additions Basque, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese (Hong Kong), Galician, Icelandic, Kannada, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Sinhala, Tamil and Telugu. Okay, breathe.
More Unique Features
Apple's iOS 8 grants users the power to utilize Family Sharing, a new feature that speaks nothing but more savings and family bonding! Purchases from iTunes, iBooks and the App Store can be shared by up to six people without the need to share Apple accounts.
"OK, Google" -- say this and get easier access to tasks and information. Lollipop allows users to say the magic phrase to devices such as Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, even while their screens are off!
